Hara’s upcoming exhibition The Promises of Monsters, opening March 2026, explores the representation of bodies and states of being deemed monstrous, foregrounding gendered forms both human and more-than-human. A screening of Apollo by Day, Athena by Night marks the fourth event in the exhibition’s public programme.
Director and screenwriter Emine Yıldırım’s debut feature film Apollo by Day, Athena by Night [Gündüz Apollon Gece Athena] won the Best Film Award in the Asian Future section at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere. The film has continued to attract attention on the festival circuit, receiving the SİYAD Award at the 44th Istanbul Film Festival, screening in the official selection of the 15th Beijing International Film Festival, and winning the FIPRESCI Award at the 28th Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival.
The film follows Defne, who grew up in an orphanage, on a fantastical and emotionally charged journey in search of her mother’s ghost. This quest, infused with moments of humour, unfolds within the enchanting atmosphere of the ancient city of Side.
Starring Ezgi Çelik in the lead role, Apollo by Day, Athena by Night boasts a strong ensemble cast including Barış Gönenen, Selen Uçer, Gizem Bilgen, Melih Düzenli and Neyra Kayabaşı, alongside veteran figures of Turkish cinema Deniz Türkali and Lale Mansur, who reunite on screen after many years. The film is produced by Dilde Mahalli (Rosa Film) and Emine Yıldırım (Ursula Film), with cinematography by Barış Aygen, editing by Selda Taşkın, and an original score by Barış Diri.
