HARA

About Us

Founded in 2022 by artist Canan Bozbağ, Hara is an independent space for art and culture celebrating creativity through original exhibitions, performances, concerts, events, and learning programmes.

Nestled in the forests of Uskumruköy, on the outskirts of the city yet closely connected to it, Hara serves as a meeting point for artists, thinkers, and curious minds from across disciplines. Through its exhibitions and events, Hara aims to inspire visitors of all ages, while its learning programmes encourage creative exploration and discovery.

Designed by architect Ceni̇z Kurt, Hara encompasses 2,000 m² of indoor space alongside a garden landscaped by Ermanno Casasco, which features a permanent sculpture collection. With its creative studios, meeting and gathering spaces, café, shop, and library, Hara invites visitors to engage in transformative encounters and imaginative experiences.

Hara’s art programmes, centred on plurality and dialogue, are shaped by an Exhibition Board composed primarily of artists.

Hara's annual exhibition programme offers emerging artists the opportunity to present their first major solo shows. With the artist residency programme Haravan, which provides artists with on-site accommodation and studio spaces, Hara aims to foster site-specific, slow-paced, and focused artistic practices.

Hara’s events programme brings together a range of disciplines including performance, dance, and music, while its learning programme draws inspiration from the 5,000 m² of greenery surrounding Hara, focusing on nature, science, and ecology.

Hara’s learning programmes encompass workshops and talks designed for all ages, structured as ongoing series that enable participants to engage in depth with specific themes.

PROGRAMMES

EXHIBITIONS

Hara first opened its doors to the public in 2022 with Soundscapes, a solo exhibition by Güneş Terkol.

In October 2023, the exhibition There Is a Place brought together site-specific works by Sena Başöz, İnci Furni, Ekin Kano, İrem Nalça, and Cansu Yıldıran.

In 2024, Cansu Yıldıran presented their first major solo exhibition, Blossoms of Farewell, realised as the culmination of a six-month residency at Hara, during which they lived on-site while preparing the exhibition.

Hara’s current exhibition, Where in History Are We?, brings together jewellery designs, texts, and performances by 30 participants from diverse artistic disciplines. The exhibition offers an alternative approach to historiography, exploring our place in history through the lens of contemporary jewellery design.

EVENTS

Alongside guided tours accompanying its exhibitions, Hara hosts a variety of events inspired by the conceptual frameworks of its artistic programme. Upuzun Gün, Hara's long-running event series, presents a full day of thematically curated talks and concerts.

From classical music to jazz concerts, site-specific dance performances, and artist talks that shed light on ongoing exhibitions, to open-air events held in its garden, Hara embraces the unique possibilities offered by its distinctive architecture as part of its programming.

LEARNING PROGRAMME

Hara’s learning programme invites visitors to engage directly with its five-acre green grounds through children’s workshops, school exhibition tours, and garden-based experiences. Compost workshops, botanical walks, and hands-on activities in Hara's lush garden help participants develop ecological awareness.

Centred on slowing down and focusing, Hara’s learning programmes unfold as a series of thematic sessions that deepen step by step, encouraging visitors to explore and expand their creative potential.

PUBLICATIONS

Hara’s book There Is a Place tells the story of the institution’s founding, sharing the vision of its founder, Canan Bozbağ, and the development process of its second exhibition. The brochures accompanying each exhibition offer visitors insight into the conceptual framework, curatorial direction, and artistic vision of the exhibition's programme, while communicating Hara’s process-oriented approach through texts contributed by guest writers.
